2016 Call for Papers: "Urban Humanities Convergence" Essex County College Humanities Conference

March 16-18, 2016

From March 16-18, 2016, the Humanities Division at Essex County College will host its Spring 2016 Conference, Urban Humanities Convergence. As the world becomes more urbanized, we seek to understand how the Humanities engages with and contributes to urban communities. The Urban Humanities Convergence will interrogate notions of urban spaces, identities and movements by bringing together scholars, artists and activists working within these terrains. From anti-gentrification activism to art movements, from urban fiction to graphic novels, the conference will encompass a wide range of disciplines and encourages interdisciplinary inquiry beyond the ivory tower.

The Urban Humanities Convergence will also highlight Newark’s 350th anniversary as a city by including events in conjunction with Newark 350, a year-long celebration of one of America’s oldest and greatest cities.

We especially welcome panels, screenings, exhibits, performances, interactive events, etc. on the following topics:
--Urban Identities and Intersectionalities Across Race, Gender, Class, Citizenship Status and Sexual Orientation
--Gentrification
--Urban Social Movements and Struggles
--Newark’s 350th Anniversary
--Urban Music Genres
--Urban Fiction
--Graphic Novels
--Film Noir/Noir Fiction
--Housing and Architecture

Abstracts should be 300 words in length. Authors should send their abstracts attached as a Word document by January 31st. Abstracts should be submitted via the submission form at http://goo.gl/forms/Jai4DFz0KN.
